I followed thiras directions and i just don't get this part

Ok I did the first save with "twopass- 1st pass" and it took like 30 minutes to render it. Now he says to do "Twopass - 2nd pass" wouldn't that overwrite my 1st pass? So whats the whole point of doing the first pass? I don't get what hes saying. I did the 2nd pass and now its all blurry....help plz
