I have a problem with adding a WCM promo to my movie. This is what happens:

If I try to add a WMV version of a promo clip, Vegas shows it correctly in the preview, but the final rendered file comes with only a black screen (audio works). This only applies to the WCM promo clips and everything I've recorded with Fraps and all audio works perfectly.

If I try to use the Xvid version, Vegas won't even recognize how it's encoded and won't show anything in the preview. The strange thing is that as far as I can remember this was not the case when I did my previous movie.

This is odd, are you sure that you use the same filetype in the rest of your movie as the wcm promo clip is?

Curiously, I have the same problem with WCM promo and Vegas 7.

Preview looks ok but render gives a black screen with only audio.

I downloaded all the promos on my HD when I first came on WCM, so it's not a file problem because they worked fine for about one month.

To use them again, I had to render them with Windows Movie Maker, and it now works fine.

But that's pretty weird.

It may be because they are in Xvid or does this happen on all versions of the promo? I have heard that Vegas has issues with the Xvid format.

I only use wmv promos

The rest of the movie is in what Fraps outputs by default. I'm not even certain what it is and I can't check now as I'm at work, but I guess it's technically pretty close to raw video.

As I sad earlier, the WMV promos work fine in the program itself but refuse to render into MP4. Xvid promos don't work at all.

try to render the wcm promo by using virtual dub and no compressor.. this will produce an .avi file and should work.

This is what I get when I try to open it in VD:

The funny thing is that I actually do have a decompressor for it since I can view it.

Doesn't work. VD says: "ASF files are not supported."

VirtualDub has not supported asf-files in ages, so you can't convert .wmv's with it. However the xvid -> uncompressed .avi conversion should work (if you have the XVID codec installed).

I solved the problem rather inelegantly by Frapsing the promo clip.

Is this happening with all the promo clips?

I tried several and it was the case with all of them (WMV doesn't render and Xvid just plain doesn't work).

Xvid doesn't work with vegas.. why wmv doesn't work for you though.. I dunno. The clips work fine for me. Try redownloading the wmv codec over at microsofts website, might help.
