Hiya

This is possibly the best XviD encoding guide ever, but there's one bit that has me stumped.

Where Thiras talks about the Quantization options he appears to contradict himself. He writes "You want all "Max something-frame quantizer"-s to be at 2." whereas in the image he posted all the Min settings are set to 2 and all the Max set to 31.

So my question is, which should i use? Min at 2 (as the image shows) or Max at 2 (as he has written)?

Thanx to anyone that can answer this, i checked at the bottom of the page for questions but could not find anything :)

Thiras 05-21-2007 07:28 PM

Eh, like the picture. Oops. :)

So 2 min, 31 max. Ty for the kind words :)

isnt this guide kinda outdated now since it was written almost a year ago?

anyway i tried your xvid guide, but something went wrong.
did it exactly as said, save the firstpass file, 1minute test file, it comes out as roughly 1MB file, when i play it in VLC/WMP it shows nothing.
i render the movie again with second pass, but i get an error saying "statsfile not found", and then "an error occurred while creating balbalbala.avi. no compatible video codec was found".

what i dont get however is what is the point of the first rendered file?
if you want me to open that file after saving it and then render from that file, then you must say, or else i end up with 2 files, one firstpass, and one secondpass.

yes i downloaded latest xvid codec from that link, installed, rebooted.

i have vista BTW if that is of any relevance.

jagarock 06-11-2007 06:43 PM

forget the whole post, i found out what was wrong.
it saved the firstpass file without the .pass, so it didnt find the file when i did second pass. you should type it in your guide, click "more" on both first and secondpass and specifically type in the filename.

like this: "hello.pass" (including the ""'s)
if you just type hello, it will be stored as hello without any file-ending, so you must look for *.* when your looking for it in secondpass.

It saves the pass by itself if you don't change anything, at least in XP, dunno about Vista. But YW, gl with your movie :)

jagarock 06-12-2007 10:12 AM

yes there was a need to change in vista, but im sure it should work like you say in xp.

Fancy that.

Some information could be helpful sir.

I used this guide to setup my render in vegas, and a "Bit rate VBR" seems to do a double pass encode, making the bit rate twice as much. As a result, my movie is far bigger than it needs to be.

Any advice?

Thiras 08-07-2007 06:38 PM

You got that wrong; double pass encode spreads the bits out where needed, still scenes get less bits and actionfilled scenes get more.

There is a box where you can fill in the bitrate ( x M or xxxx K), and make sure the boxes on the uh, internet or whatever tab are all unchecked.

Hello, im writing here because i can't find help anywhere else so im hoping you guys that use vegas a lot know what's going on.
Basicly i try to open Vegas and it starts loading up and it always gets stuck at the point where it says initializing UI, now, i've used Vegas before and i've edited fine, but for some reason i can't open it anymore. I've uninstalled and reinstalled back and it still happens, im running Vista, there were some updates about a month back, so i dont know if that caused it, since i really havent used Vegas for like 3 months.
Anyone know of this? or know what it could be?

Thanks

Ok, so I'm encoding in WMV and it say it's encoding it and it takes a really long time, but when I actually go to check my final encoded video out it clearly is way too small of a file size and has absolutely *NO* video. All I hear is audio. What could be causing this? I'm using the exact same settings as listed in this walkthrough for encoding in .WMV

authority11 08-14-2007 10:16 AM

Never mind! I was stupid and was forgetting the *M* on the bitrate for 3M!

vegito254 08-17-2007 04:33 PM

Think you should know that the koepi site (http://koepi.org) is down. If you are looking for the Xvid codec of koepi you can find it here:

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Koepi_XviD.htm

Don't know what happend to that site though.

Thiras 08-17-2007 09:42 PM

Koepis site is up for me, was probably just temporary. Though it links to the dl location you posted :)

vegito254 08-17-2007 09:49 PM

Yep it's up again now. Was down for a while though. Seems that they made there site a little more fancy too :D

Hey,

could someone explain this first and second-pass stuff?
I got everything set up as the tutorial says

But I usually just render the secondpass with 3000 kb
because if I render it as first pass?.. just a black screen
movie size is kinda huge

So I tried to understand this thing. The way I tried it now
is I selected First Pass -> more... -> I click on the "..." select my desktop and type the name "Stupid" -> Save it. after that I select second pass -> More... -> click on the "..." select my desktop and write "Stupid" -> open it. and render it with the name for instance "Stupid the movie" and uhh.. yeah file size is... still kinda big (10 seconds clip with 1 effect applied to it for like 2 seconds is 6~ mb I mean
10seconds = 6 mb~
1Minute = 36 mb~
10Minute movie = 360~ mb. The quality is pretty good though I don't want such a huge filesize.

What am I doing wrong? :embarassed:

Thiras 10-31-2007 01:46 PM

That's normal, you probably didn't compress the audio though.

Mp3 is normally 128 kbps, uncompressed audio is ~1500 kbps. It makes quite a difference :)

Mannimacro 03-15-2008 07:24 AM

anyone could tell me a good program to record movies for free?

Maxmoaz 11-11-2008 08:45 PM

not working

I'm using Sony Vegas 8.0 PRO version and I followed those steps for the Mpeg4 codecs, I followed the steps exactly like he shows, I tested rendering a 4 second footage 1st with mpeg4 ofc and twopass 1stpass like he says we should do 1st....

The result is music, only music and a black screen... So I'm thinking "Hmm maybe I'll just continue like he says" So I throw the Twopass 1stpass into sony vegas again and render it this time using Twopass 2nspass like he says..

When THAT is done I just get a green screen, but still Music!

This is how it looked like, any suggestions? It's be REALLY appreciated.

You can see my options to the left of that xvid.

Maxmoaz 11-11-2008 08:47 PM

Also when rendering that "Xvid Status" window that pops up is just... plain white, almost as if it had crashed. Could it have something to do? It's like that everytime.

Barkskin 03-15-2009 09:03 PM

Using win7 now and I was hoping to use this guide to get my Vegas encoding up and running. The link is unfortunately dead. Anyone got a cached copy on their HD?

Rethos 01-26-2010 01:39 PM

im having a problem with rendering in avi

i have made 2 templates. the one is 1st pass and the 2nd is the 2nd pass. They have the exact same settings, apart from the fact that the 2nd one is a "Twopass-2nd pass" "Encoding type" as explained in the tutorial.

i save the movie with the 1st pass, with the name "testing.avi". After that i render again, using the 2nd pass template, just clicking the previous movie without changing the name or anything. The programs asks me to overwrite and i press yes. When the rendering is over, the final movie is a low mb result, but with terrible quality.

i believe that something is wrong with the pass things, since if i ignore the 1st pass and i render on 2nd pass straight away, i get the same result...

am i doing the whole thing right? do u have to do something in order to enable the 2nd pass?

thx in advance

Bisollini 02-28-2010 07:06 PM

Uzbeki 03-02-2010 02:04 PM

labadora 07-07-2011 03:09 AM

Daddylicious 02-06-2013 09:57 PM

Hey guys... not to keep reviving old/dead posts, but given they're still Sticky'd...

Could someone Official comment as to what format/export/render settings are preferred for uploading here?

Thanks!
