Thoradrim's Comprehensive Editing Program Listing

Editing Programs
I've tried all of these and can say they are all superb, if used properly. Of course, just as with anything else, the more you spend, the more options you'll have at your disposal.

Windows Movie Maker (free with Windows XP)
This is a fairly constraining program. The effects are all preset and there is little to no customization. If you're making a film for a friend or just want to show other players something "cool", Movie Maker is a good choice. If you're looking to make an epic saga, you're gonna have to spend some dough.
Movie Maker Home

Pinnacle Studio 9 ($79.99*; Free 30 Day Trial - Requires Email Address)
The program is extremely intuitive and easy to learn for the common home user. Sadly, it's extremely buggy, and will induce many headaches. Furthermore, you must purchase a plethora of plugins to harvest the program's full functionality. A very low A/V track limit makes this app almost inplausible for big projects. Still, it has some very nice effects and is a powerful little program overall. Suited for the patient hobbyist filmmaker.

Ulead VideoStudio 9 ($99.99*; Free 30 Day Trial - Registration Required)
I highly recommend this program for both newbs and hobbyists alike. The interface is extremely intuitive, so it should be a piece of cake to learn. Great effects, great customization, and a pretty good chromakeyer. The only downer is the lack of more Audio Mixing Controls. If Adobe Premiere Elements intimidates you, you'll probably find VideoStudio very welcoming.

Adobe Premiere Elements ($99.99*; Free 30 Day Trial - Registration Required)
If you can get past its somewhat forboding interface, then you'll find Premiere Elements is probably the most powerful editing app in its price range. 99 A/V tracks combined with excellent effects controls and timeline manipulation, and you've got a monster on your hands. For the price, it can't be beat...
Premiere Elements Home
Trial (NTSC)

Sony Vegas 6 ($449*; Free 30 Day Trial)
Sony Vegas is really starting to shine as an all-in-one editing solution. It has some of the best built-in sound controls I've ever seen and it's definately no slacker when it comes to the visual aspect. All effects are high-quality and easy to manipulate. Color correction and transitions are top notch. The interface is intuitive and quick to learn. If Adobe isn't careful, Sony will take the spotlight.

Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 ($699*; Free 30 Day Trial - Registration Required)
Premiere Pro is my "baby" when it comes to editing. She's a powerful app, bordering on Pro-grade. She's not as "glamourous" as Vegas, but she packs quite a punch. If you couldn't tell, I'm a Premiere Pro fanboy and therefore you'll never get a nonbiased summary. Embarassed

Other Software
I've tried a few of these, so will comment on what I can.

Final Cut Pro (MAC ONLY) ($999*; No Trial) - Get ready for the fast lane, hun - this is what the Pros use. There's nothing you can't do with this little baby.
iMovie HD (MAC ONLY) ($79.99*; No Trial) - From what I hear, this is one powerful little app. "The lite version of Final Cut".
Avid (EXPENSIVE) - The editing behemoth of the film/broadcast industry. You're getting into serious territory here. Unless you have been to film school or have some editing background, stay away.
Roxio Videowave 7 ($49.99*; No Trial) - I really can't recommend this one - extremely limited and unstable. Movie Maker could probably do a better job.
Video Explosion Deluxe ($79.99*; No Trial)
Pinnacle Liquid 6 ($499*; Free Trial - By Mail Only)
Ulead Media Studio Pro 7 ($299*; Free Trial - Registration Required)

Adobe Photoshop CS2 ($599*; Free 30 Day Trial - Registration Required) - Digital Imaging, Graphic Design, Video Mattes... Is there anything Photoshop can't do?
Sony Acid Pro 5 ($299*; Free 30 Day Trial) - Loop-based Music Creation. Create royalty-free music even if you aren't a musician!
Sony Sound Forge 8 ($299*; Free 30 Day Trial) - Excellent sound editing software.
Adobe After Effects 6.5 Pro ($999*; Free 30 Day Trial - Registration Required) - The industry standard for video compositing.

Thank you. This was very informative considering I'm looking for a new editing program.

Balgosa 10-18-2006 05:50 PM

my recommendation is Sony Vegas. It is a bit expensive but Sony Vegas Movie Studio is only $79 and it has a lot of options. The drawback being it can only do 2 video, 2 audio tracks.

Onlis 10-23-2006 02:38 AM

I would recommend Sony Vegas. It worked really well for me when I started editing.

teh_taco 10-23-2006 08:02 AM

I started with crappy windows movie maker and switched to adobe premiere. Good choice for me - after some tutorials the start was kind of easy, maybe because I'm using photoshop for ages now and the handling is similar.

guess I should try out apple's final cut, since I can't manage to understand after effects properly.. it's just too big :P

Here's a list of free Windows video editors:

I use Vegas also. It's easy to self-learn without using tutorials. Just drag and drop clips and music. Click buttons to add effects, rinse and repeat. Easy chroma-keying!

could anyone post any trial links like where you could get this stuff? :) i tried everything i could. Sony Vegas Trial version,Adobe Premiere 1.5 and 2.0. Then i tried adobe after effects. there was always an error. lol

godliest 02-11-2007 11:20 AM

I use both Vegas and Adobe, depending on what I need. Altho I'm pretty unskilled at both, hopefully I will get better.

I COULD be wrong but it's really expensive probaly the fact that I think directors use sony vegas for real movies.

I do believe they use the most expensive program here, aVid, but that's only my guess. Some of the effects I've seen in movies simply can't be added with Sony Vegas.

To quote IMDB about 300:

Quote:

Post production took almost a year. The film was edited on an Avid, with an HD cut also maintained in Final Cut Pro. The 3D was made using Maya, XSI, and Lightwave The 2D composites were made with Shake, Inferno, Fusion, and Combustion. The filmmakers prefer Macintosh, but large portions of the movie were made under Linux. Asset management was handled by custom software written in the Panorama development environment, made by Provue. Color management was handled by Truelight software. The film was scanned on a northlight scanner and was recorded on the arrilaser. Most of the film was shot at high speed, between 50 and 150fps. Normal film is at 24fps. The film was transferred to HD SR tape and quicktime, and HD quicktimes were the basis for the HD preview cuts. The working resolution for the film was 2K, at a working aspect ratio of 2.11 and a projected aspect ratio of 2.35.
So yeah, avid.

godliest 04-17-2007 01:58 PM

Yep. But I was maybe not thinking about 300, but it's as good example as any. Now I was just wondering, out of curiosity, really which of the Avid programs did they use? There isn't just one Avid program that's made for editing, do you know which they used?

Dwârv 06-13-2007 08:39 PM

May I throw in one more:
I work with Magix Video deluxe, its not expensive (can't remember exactly, was something like 50 Euro) and for the money you get a very nice editing programm. I'm happy with it.
I cant compair it with other programms - lack of other programms, ye know - but a friend of mine (professional filmmaker) adviced me to stay with Magix and not to invest in Sony Vegas (wich I was thinking about).

im a newb i use moviemaker :O and i wonder what i should use

Ashuren 12-01-2007 06:13 PM

Another good program that you can use is...
It affects and and edits sounds.

Audicity

jffyt 02-21-2008 01:21 PM

I have also used Magix Movie Edit Pro 11. (about $60 US) It has an interface from hell, but it has many effects (transitions, pan, zoom, chroma, speed adjust, etc.) once you figure out where to pound your face on the keyboard.

saibot11 02-25-2008 07:17 AM

Adobe After Effects

I see that you've excluded Adobe After Effects from the list. I use it and it's great, hard to learn, indeed, but I belive it's one of the best. I use a combination between Sony Vegas and AE, anyways, if you wish to see some tutorials here's a pretty good site (After effects only). http://www.videocopilot.net/tutorials.html

Good Luck!

Vegas ftw

RekkingBall 07-31-2008 07:42 AM

I'm considering getting the $79 version of Sony Vegas movie studio, does anyone know the real difference between it and it's 120 dollar cousin Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum? I get associate discounts where, I work, and was considering going with the 120 dollar version as I can probably get it down to around 90-100 dollars. I would like the opinion of someone who has worked with both if possible, the 79 dollar version just worries me it may be too 'home movie' and not enough professionalism that I'm looking for. Please remember that the real version of Vegas is out of the question, I'm a university student, not a real estate mogul.

Currently using Adobe Premiere 6.5

Took a bit of getting used to, but a vast and appealing list of editing effects and possibilities, seemingly large (If not unlimited) amount of AV/Sound channels and a lot of compression options.

I use it primarily with the Adobe Photoshop artwork I do for the movies, so it seemed natural to stick to Adobe's movie editor, too. I remember Sony Vegas for editing sounds years gone by, seems to be growing in popularity as an all out movie editor now, too. Personally I dont think I could adapt to an additional editor especially one with limited AV Channels as I use a lot of green/blue screening for certain things in my movies, thus two channels is totally unacceptable, but it certainly works with sound far better than Adobe Premiere in all aspects.

Heres downloads for all sony vegas versions

I am using AVS Video Editor 4 (http://avs4you.com) and it seems to give a good mix of control, and the ability to overlay multiple items on the base video. It also has very precise timelining capabilities, and trim/multi-trim, of the multiple source videos.

The cost is reasonable, and signing up for one AVS product gets you acess to their entire line of editing and converting software.
