Recommended external HDs for recording
Hi, I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions to getting a new external HD. My current HD is way to small to get any decent amount of video footage. Prefer the HD to be from a local retail store (Best Buy(yuck), Comp USA, etc..) Reason being because I am asking for it for my birthday :P
Running Windows XP, I am not looking for a very big one, something around 60-100 gigs ? and around 100 bucks. I know I can just look on best buy and get one, but I want to be sure its not going to be sluggish when I record. Any recommendations would be much appreciated, thanks =) P.S. Sorry if this is in the wrong forum :\ |
External HDs arent good for recording & for 100 bucks youll get more like 200 gbs :p
edit: If your computer supports SATA, get one and be happy |
yeah I figured you where gonna say that, USB ftl? and I have no idea what SATA is lol
So if not a external HD, what? |
Internal :)
The most common cables used for internal hdds are PATA (aka IDE) and SATA. Sata is newer and faster and has much thinner cables (IDE = gray flat). |
well I also got a 500gb external drive (by packard bell, was a special offer in a store and it's good enough). if my internal disc is full I just copy things over and delete :top:
never tried to record directly on it, mainly because I already know fraps wouldn't be amused. |
thanks a lot for the replys =D
I think what ill end up doing is rec first on my internal, then switching to external..seems like about the only option at this point, thanks a lot for the help :) |
I don't seem to have issues recording on my external mybook.. 500gb usb or firewire. Eric laughs at me cause he thinks I do, but hey each to his own :) eSata is getting pretty cheap and is supposed to be fast, and you could probably get an enclosure and drive of decent size at bestbuy for $100.
We talk about this more on episode 26 of the podcast as well! Thanks for the question! |
I suggest newegg.com if you plan to purchase stuff online. Sata are getting rather cheap admittedly. You can get a 1TB drive for around or less than $300 USD(internal or external, ex seems to be cheaper).
