No video appearing for *.avi downloads/streams

I'm not sure what's going wrong since I don't usually use quicktime. I downloaded a recent copy of it. However, every time I download a *.avi movie from the site, it just brings up the quicktime toolbar. It makes it appear to be an audio only file.
