top 50 list suggestion

something that buggers me with the top 50 list for a while. maybe i'm totally wrong, if so, please correct me, i was always wondering how the rating system works exactly. it seems to me that the number of votes isn't taken into the score enough. as an example, if you take totp3, it has a median rating of 4.990, and 4900 votes. exploration has a 4.983 rating and 838 votes. now, i might be way off as i said, but even taking into account both fanbois and downraters, i always felt that there should maybe a category displaying the arithmetic mean in relation to the number of votes, as a very high or very low arithmetic mean is much harder to achieve with a very high number of votes/values, than with a low number.

I don't really see the need for it, since I see the ratings of movies abit like spot tests. The difference between 4900 and 838 votes isn't that big, since the possibility of the rating changing, when it's already got around 800 ratings is very small. It's all simple mathematics.

When a company dealing with public statistics is making a poll, they seldom use more than 1000 attenders, since no more is needed to make a very valid and solid opinion poll.

The higher rated movies are very often also the ones most viewed on WCM, making your question a minor problem.
