The argument for an overall top 50 listing by category is that the dropdown lists you mention are dependent on time. The best movies are arguably not all published in the same week or month, but generally I'm visiting the site to be entertained as much as possible, no matter if the movie is a week or a year old - if you're here to see what's best of what's new, the dropdown lists are ideal. Either way, both features supplement each other well.
