I've used both of them, and use Vegas these days (not sure how Premier has advanced since I last used it) and would probably recommend that you jump straight into that instead of Movie Maker (I don't think Movie Maker will teach you enough to make using Vegas easy at first). The best to learn a program I've found is not trawling through help files at the first sign of a problem, go around pressing all the buttons for yourself and see what button does what.

Vegas 7 beta (6?) trial:

Abobe Premier trial:

Adobe After Effects (not an actual editor, but for all those really flashy effects, not recommended until you have a good level of editing experience):

Hope that helps to give you a footing. =D

lol Choice is yours but the way I see this is for a complete noob in this area in which you have stated you have no knowledge whatsoever, you will be faced with two things with Vegas or Premiere.
The two links given will give you both a trial version. Vegas, wont even let you save your final product and gives you 30 days. This is also 400.00$ software if you want to buy the full version. So in other words...after 30 days, unless you are willing to fork out that kind of money. It is senseless to go that route.
Adobe Premiere- Same thing friend, except two difference's. At least Premiere will allow you to use a full version and test it out to see it's full potential before ending in 30 days. However...after those 30 days, your either up a creek or your gonna spend 700.00$

So...all in all, for someone just getting started, this is not something I would suggest. This is for the person who really really wants to get into editing.
The beautiful word of Free is why I sugest to you this software, and it isnt half bad. Navigation is simple and construction is painless.
Dood..lol go with this Windows Movie Maker
