Gamecam is a good option if you don't want to spen dmoney on a recorder, yes, although as Jim here said, the quality is a lot poorer.
I made a few recordings with it, and it worked, although it's a bit blurry, so if you want to record with high detail (being able to read chat/combat log) you'd be better of spending some money on Fraps
