VirtualDub has not supported asf-files in ages, so you can't convert .wmv's with it. However the xvid -> uncompressed .avi conversion should work (if you have the XVID codec installed).

I solved the problem rather inelegantly by Frapsing the promo clip.

Xvid doesn't work with vegas.. why wmv doesn't work for you though.. I dunno. The clips work fine for me. Try redownloading the wmv codec over at microsofts website, might help.
