How to split my file where I want?

Hello,

I'm starting to make my own videos but I'm having a problem. The videos I make, are very long and I cannot figure out how to cut them where I want them to be cut. I'd like to be able to insert text at a certain point, or fade out and back in at certain point etc. I use the windows xp version of windows movie maker so it will only split it into random chunks and not where I want it split.

What software do you use for this, or maybe you have another suggestion?
