Recording to a 2nd drive?

Quote:
Achieving good quality

One thing that is good to get to improve performance and quality is to get a second hardrive it doesn't have to be somthing real big but it will put less stress on the computer therefor helping in both quality of the movie and performance.
This is taken from the Fraps performance sticky thread, and I was wondering a bit more about the specifics here.

Is a different partition of the same drive enough?

Or does it mean a different drive altogether in raid configuration with the primary drive?

How does this improve performance?

By how much does it improve?

I currently have a Western Digital Raptor 150GB SATA 16MB 10000RPM. Any answers to this would be much appreciated, as I'm considering to buy a second drive just like it for this.

This is meaning a totally different drive, if you read and write from the same hard drive you greatly reduce the performance of the recording. There is no telling how much it can improve it because it is system independent, only you can find that out by trial and error.

No, external HDDs are too slow to record to.

To the OP, The 10k rpm raptor is more than sufficient for recording, a 2nd drive wouldnt help.

Hmmm, I still experience slowdown during recording.

Let me ask this then:

Is it normal to experience a slowdown during recording, but when you afterwards look at the actual recording, it's much smoother there?

That's how it is for me anyway.

I dunno about normal but thats how it is for me, i get solid 60 FPS without Fraps running, while its running it gets cut down to a 30 normal but will sometimes be droping to 15 DPS for a second then back to 30 so its a little chopy but easily still playable.

After you go back into the Fraps folder and watch it in fullscreen its perfectly clear and smooth, although sometimes it kind of slows down a little in a real laggy spot. I turned down some graphics ingame and it seemed to go away completly though.

So i pretty much get the same kinda of thing

It can seem like that yes. 30 fps while frapsing can feel pretty nonsmooth ingame (feels like its skipping slightly) but the file looks great.

Does fraps report 30 (or whatever you are recording at) fps while recording or lower?

Around 30 fps yea, but even when I record at 60 fps it feels like its skipping.

If youre on a laptop, record to the internal drive then move the files to the external drive.
