i need a lil help

ok. just got sony vegas 7.0 finally no more trials. and im making a video, but when i want to add text to something. all i get is the backround for the text, and in this case its a black background with my text i want to add. i forgot how to make the back transparent so the text is by itself. so can anyone help me with this?
