Advice for a beginer?

okay, here it goes, my first post to this community.

I've been interested in the idea of doing some WoW movies for a while now. not just that "LOL watch me pwn this n00b" stuff set to music, but some actual fun video's. unfortunately prior to last week i didn't have the machine necessary to do it, I could barely run Wow above 15 fps as it was, let alone trying to record.

I recently invested in a new box, and can now happily enjoy much higher frame rates, I played with both game cam and fraps (at seperate times of course), and had less than a 5 fps drop when recording. which left me still pulling about 40 fps.

so now that i have the hardware, I was wondering what advice the community would give to someone just starting out in the world of machinima?

I have almost no knowledge of video editing, or recording, I have a godo deal of knowledge of video codecs, that i gained as a "fringe benefit" from some other projects i worked on. but outside of that I'm totally lost as to where to start.

any advice, links, tutorials, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance guys.

There are some fantastic guides out there aimed at newcomers to machinima editing.

To get started with recording your footage (the most important bit of course), you could take a look at:
http://www.mmorpgforum.net/showthread.php?t=331

Once you've got that sorted, check out:
http://forums.curse-gaming.com/showt...ighlight=fraps

Remember, your first videos are unlikely to be jawdropping, but everyone has to start somewhere and as you keep working and learning new techniques, you'll improve vastly!

Good luck!

A good thing to do is to start fiddiling with editing...programs it's good to do that to get formillair with everything make a couple test movies as well with just a few clips then edit them to test things out...

That's a good start..

right now I have both Fraps and game cam installed
I've done a few test runs with them neither of them causes more than a 2 frame per second drop in my game which is good,
I'm at a total loss as to what video editing packages are out there. any links/names/advice in that area would be extremely useful

For starters, I think a great begining editor would be Microsoft's Movie Maker [ a free editor and download ] would be a excellent choice for you.
Use this to get around the actual editing and processing, and then you can try your likes with Adobe Premiere.

I think Adobe Premier and Sony Vegas are the two main contenders, and the two best pieces of editing software out there.

I've used both of them, and use Vegas these days (not sure how Premier has advanced since I last used it) and would probably recommend that you jump straight into that instead of Movie Maker (I don't think Movie Maker will teach you enough to make using Vegas easy at first). The best to learn a program I've found is not trawling through help files at the first sign of a problem, go around pressing all the buttons for yourself and see what button does what.

Vegas 7 beta (6?) trial:

Abobe Premier trial:

Adobe After Effects (not an actual editor, but for all those really flashy effects, not recommended until you have a good level of editing experience):
http://www.adobe.com/go/tryafter_effects_pro

Hope that helps to give you a footing. =D

lol Choice is yours but the way I see this is for a complete noob in this area in which you have stated you have no knowledge whatsoever, you will be faced with two things with Vegas or Premiere.
The two links given will give you both a trial version. Vegas, wont even let you save your final product and gives you 30 days. This is also 400.00$ software if you want to buy the full version. So in other words...after 30 days, unless you are willing to fork out that kind of money. It is senseless to go that route.
Adobe Premiere- Same thing friend, except two difference's. At least Premiere will allow you to use a full version and test it out to see it's full potential before ending in 30 days. However...after those 30 days, your either up a creek or your gonna spend 700.00$

So...all in all, for someone just getting started, this is not something I would suggest. This is for the person who really really wants to get into editing.
The beautiful word of Free is why I sugest to you this software, and it isnt half bad. Navigation is simple and construction is painless.
Dood..lol go with this Windows Movie Maker

I really like Sony Vegas. Cost alot but VERY good. Easy to learn. But unless you got a friend with it go with WMM.
