I don't know how good it is to use divx under xvid. In Vegas when you click render you can choose in the second slot, under what the name is in what format your gonna render, do you have the MP3 audio .mp3 option there? If so you can render the audio as MP3 and then put em together in VDub.
You can also try not picking the XviD MPEG-4 when you render but the DivX 6.X codec(2 logical CPUs). I noticed that you don't got interleave every(second) option clicked, i have, dunno what its for exactly though |

so any ideas on why I can't see anything under mpeg layer-3?

Could be due to the sample rate being low - should be 44100 or 48000 hz. I know for a fact lame has troubles with that. Export as uncompressed audio (with a higher sample rate) then import/compress it in virtualdubmod with your video stream set to direct stream mode.
