Adobe products question.

Yeah so I've always been editing with Vegas and lately I wanted to make a new video and vegas started getting on my nerve, I feel like I'd be ready for something more complex, maybe but more powerful.. so I wanted to go and get Adobe Premiere.. but it seems like there is a lot of version now.
Adobe Premiere 1.5? 2.0? why are those still around? I've seen 6.0 also...
And then CS3? I've read it's a lot easier to play with video speed in it.. And what about Adobe Premiere Elements, whats that?

Oh and Adobe After Effects.. I've seen lot of people use this, pretty much everyone who use Premiere seems to use it. What do they use after effect for exactly? What does it do that Premiere doesn't do?

well, after effects starts where premiere ends. in premiere you just have rather simple effect possibilities, but real time editing. after effects can't be used as a final editor, but it's great for post-production effects or motion graphics, hence the name. after effects still has several limitations, therefore it's not industry standard for real movie productions, but it shines in broadcasting designs (= tv).. but it's enough for wow stuff and rather easy to learn compared to similar apps maybe that's a reason many movie makers use it.

the only editor I know about which combines a little bit of compositing (= after effects, you "compose" multiple layers with multiple effects to one final render) with real time editing (=premiere, quick cutting audio/video, fast real time preview, limited visual fx) is apple final cut, but it's mac only.

hope that helps.

After Effects is quite complex, and isn't for people not willing to get right into it. I have never used premiere but it sounds alright, I use vegas.

After Effects is for the flashy stuff, while programs like Vegas and Premiere are more suited to cutting it all together at the end.

I'd say AE is probably the best program out there for the fancy stuff. =)

I don't know. I'd go for it over any of those products still (maybe because I don't have a Mac) just for the volume of plugins available.

However, I do wish they'd make use of hardware acceleration and try to give it better support for working with 3D.
